Undercover Security Guard Sacrifices 200 Birds to Secure Truck Stop Espresso Machine

CELINA, TN — A 14-year undercover investigation ended in January when authorities raided an illegal cockfighting ring operating out of an abandoned storage shed at the Celina 52 Truck Stop. Security guard Rodney Bartow infiltrated the 3 a.m. matches back in 2009. He spent over a decade acting as one of the South's top cockfighters to gather evidence against the gamblers. During the sting, Bartow amassed $150,000 in illicit winnings. Management funneled the blood money directly into facility upgrades, paying for new shower tiles and an espresso machine.

Six ringleaders were ultimately arrested during the dawn raid. The operation required total dedication from Bartow, a Cold War veteran who had to supply his own combatant poultry to keep his cover intact for nearly a decade and a half. "Over 200 of my birds were killed in the fights just so I could maintain credibility with these people," Bartow said following the sting. "But I would do it all over again if it meant saving just one more animal from future harm."
